Dark red in the glass, the nose presents with aromas of blackberry coulis, dried herbs and a subtle hint of crushed rock.  The palate is firm and well structured, a wine destined for long aging that will reward the patient wine collector.  Flavors of super concentrated raspberry and red currant up front evolve into subtler reminders of forest floor, toasted hazelnuts and chalk.  The finish goes on and on, a wine to be enjoyed every year for decades.

About
Vineyard Notes
Vineyard Notes
Sourced exclusively from our Walter’s Vineyard high on the bluff of our Estate. This blend is made exclusively from the Pommard clone which is on the back side of the site, most of which is steeply planted. The soil itself is a sandy loam that is extremely well drained. The combination of constant wind and fog lends this little plot of land to exceptional conditions for premium quality pinot noir.

Production Notes
Production Notes
Fermented in a 4-ton fermenter with 30% of the fruit left whole cluster and added to the bottom of the tank first. The rest was de-stemmed then tipped on top. The fruit was left to cold soak until the onset of indigenous, primary fermentation. Punchdowns ensued up to three times daily during peak fermentation then slowed to once a day below 10 Brix. The wine went dry a few days later and was then left to go through Malolactic fermentation indigenously as well. The wine was aged in barrel with no racking until 2 months before bottling. Sixty days before bottling the wine was racked off of its fermentation lees to help it settle.

Other Notes
Despite an early February budbreak, California experienced a relatively mild 2022. The warm autumn weather made for excellent phenolic ripeness. Yields were down and both berries and clusters were smaller, signaling greater concentration. A heat wave in September caused some scrambling to bring in earlier ripening varieties, but fortunately for us, we picked our fruit ahead of the record temperatures.
