Rockpile AVA was Established in 2002. Rockpile is 15,000 acres of rocky, mountainous land. It's influenced by Lake Sonoma which is a manmade reservoir. Rockpile lies at the northern tip of the AVA. It sits above 2000 feet above sea level and 10 miles from the pacific ocean, setting these vines above the fog layer. At this elevation, the vines are gently cooled by onshore breezes.
2018 offered winemakers an exceptional year. Rockpile had a long growing season with moderate temperatures. Sonoma encountered an increase in rainfall in the spring, with some notable heat spikes in mid-summer months. However, it was a mild summer which created tolerable conditions for fruit to mature slowly without additional heat stress. The 2018 vintage offered excellent growing conditions. A mild winter followed by an early spring started the year off early. Sonoma County did not suffer any heat waves or fires this summer, so the ripening was slow and steady. This vintage will be characterized by good acidities and lower alcohols. This is a notable vintage and worthy of collectors to hold on to.
