We have been partnered with Gary Branham of Rockpile Vineyard since 2006. We have experienced first hand the how carefully he nurtures the several small blocks of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah for our 2018 Convict Zinfandel. These berries were culitvated in the rocky terrain of Rockplie Vineyards. Old Vine Zinfandel Clones called Demple DuPratt that orignited from old vine plantings from Mendocino blended with a touch of Petite Sirah.
Brambly fruit and spice on the nose, threads of minerality show up that sets this wine apart and idetifies its Rockpile origin. The juicy palate mirrors these characters
Red Zinfandel is a hedonistic varietal. Pure pleasure for all. We enjoy this wine with BBQ and friends. The 2018 vintage offered excellent growing conditions. A mild winter followed by an early spring started the year off early. Sonoma County did not suffer any heat waves (or fires) this summer so the ripening was slow and steady. We picked much later this year as mild days continued into September. This vintage will be characterized by good acidities and lower alcohols.
The Fruit was hand harvested on 3 separate dates. The clusters were gently de-stemmed, capturing as many whole berries as possible. Fruit was then cold soaked in small custom open top tanks with submerged cap technology.
